Mission Statement
Christian Brothers Academy is an independent, four year secondary school for qualified young men who desire to receive a college preparatory education, guided by Roman Catholic principles in the tradition of Saint John Baptist De La Salle and the Brothers of the Christian Schools. As a community of believers, Christian Brothers Academy works in association to achieve the shared vision of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and the teachings of Saint La Salle. As a La Sallian School, Christian Brothers Academy emphasizes the religious education, academic preparation, and cultural, personal, and social growth of its students. Christian Brothers Academy serves students from multi-cultural backgrounds. It guides them in making intelligent choices based on Gospel values. Students learn critical thinking and sound judgment.
History
The history of Christian Brothers Academy is short in time but long in accomplishments. Early in 1958, a group of devoted laymen, headed by Mr. John C. Henderson, Mr. Peter E. Fleming and Doctor George A. Sheehan, realized the need for another Catholic High School in Monmouth County. With the approval of the Most Reverend Bishop George W. Ahr, they initiated a drive to raise funds for the purchase of a piece of property. The Brothers of the Christian Schools, under the leadership of their Provincial, Brother Anthony John Halpin, agreed to staff the school and finance its construction.
The former Whitney Greentree Stables, a 157-acre farm, was purchased and one building was converted into what is now Henderson Hall. With six Brothers and 150 students, the school was opened in September, 1959; two years later the new school building was finished and ready for occupancy. The first principal of Christian Brothers Academy was Brother Albert Bernard McKenna. He was succeeded by Brother Stephen McCabe in 1964, and by Brother Peter Mannion in 1972. Brother Andrew O′Gara was appointed as the fourth principal in 1979, and first president of the Academy in 1991. Brother Ralph Montedoro is the school principal.
Philosophy
Christian Brothers Academy is committed to the values of the Roman Catholic tradition and instills Christian attitudes and values in its students. The prominence of a Catholic atmosphere in the La Sallian tradition fosters service projects, private and communal prayer, and liturgical celebrations.
Christian Brothers Academy prepares students for challenges in the future, encourages students to form a lasting commitment to Gospel values, and develops student responsibility and leadership. Through co-curricular activities in a disciplined environment, Christian Brothers Academy promotes the spiritual, emotional, and social development of its students.
Christian Brothers Academy commits itself to academic excellence mindful of the needs, goals, and abilities of the student body. It provides programs which enable the Students to realize their academic and personal potential. These programs reflect the integration of Christian values into the full range of its academic courses. Christian Brothers Academy works with its students to encourage assimilation into its programs. It graduates those students who are able to maintain its academic standards and code of student conduct.
Christian Brothers Academy encourages an atmosphere in which teachers work together in association based on a common acceptance of Gospel values and on a shared desire to foster these values in their own lives and those of their students. Through this association they make possible a collegial style of administration and decision making. The association among the faculty, parents, and alumni manifests a concern for student development, diverse learning styles, and student interest and ability.
Students at Christian Brothers Academy complete a comprehensive educational program in an atmosphere which reflects tolerance and sensitivity for the individuality of each person, with genuine concern for justice and peace, and for service to fellow students and the world community in which they live.
Spirituality
The Administration and Faculty of Christian Brothers Academy is devoted to the spiritual formation of the young men entrusted to their care. They have arranged a program of instruction, mentoring, and prayer that is designed to foster the life of the spirit in each member of the CBA Community.
Central to this program is the daily lived experience of prayer. The school day at CBA is immersed in prayer: From the opportunity to attend daily Mass, to that moment when everyone in the building stops what he is doing to attend to Morning Prayer, to prayer starting off each period of the day each student is given numerous reminders of how important it is to respond to God in prayer.
The prayer life of the students is informed by a solid program of religious instruction. While academically rigorous, the faculty of the Religious Studies department never truly separates the object and the subject of study. Religion class does more than merely feed the head.
Christian Brothers Academy is fortunate to have both a Chaplain, and a Campus Minister. Father John Folchetti has served the CBA Community as Chaplain since 1988. Mr. Timothy Sewnig, a member of the Religious Studies faculty since 1991, also serves as the school's Director of Campus Ministry.
